Sheila Caldwell
RN, CLE, CPD (CAPPA)

Sheila Caldwell is a Registered Nurse, Certified Lactation Consultant and Certified Postpartum Doula. As a postpartum doula, I address concerns as well as everyday tasks. Offering the mother and family effective support by educating and nurturing empowers the new family towards confidence in adapting to life in the first few weeks after birth.

I was raised in a family that was supporting each other in the doula fashion long before we knew there was a word for it! My nursing career began in 1975, and my multifaceted clinical experience assists in guiding the family at whatever level of need. Support measures I offer include guidance with breastfeeding, newborn characteristics and care, integrating a newborn into the home, normal physiologic recovery for the mother, multiples, postpartum mood disorders, support for grieving family, and providing referrals to resources available.

Guidance, Reassurance, and Comfort are what I like to bring to a family at this incredibly special time!

Sheila’s clinical experience as an RN includes Pediatrics, Lactation, Hospice, Inpatient and Home Health for the Mother Baby Unit at St. John’s Hospital Women and Children’s Center. In addition to her role as a Personal Birth Consultant, at St. John’s Hospital, Sheila is a facilitator of the “First Steps Mother’s Support Group. Other teaching, facilitator experience includes “Out of the Blues” postpartum depression support group, ”Baby Basics” prenatal classes, “Growth and Development” for 5th grade students, “Positive Body Image and Self Esteem” for junior high age, and “Living a Healthy Lifestyle Before and Beyond Menopause” Sheila and her husband, Jack, have two grown children, Dylan and Lacey.

Testimonials

I am SO glad I had Sheila's guidance before and after I delivered my twins. From preparing, delivering and breast feeding to bathing and treating rashes and colds, Sheila has been a positive, responsive, honest and caring resource. Her personal yet professional nature is reassuring, and she goes above and beyond to keep you and your baby (or babies) comfortable, calm and happy. I am proud to say that I was able to breast feed my twins for a year, but I know that it would not have been possible without Sheila's coaching and encouragement.

I'm generally not a person to ask for help, especially as a new mom when I felt unsure about everything. Sheila's caring expertise got me through the first (very rough) few weeks into the challenges of breastfeeding. Without her help and support, I don't think I would have been able to successfully breastfeed my son through his first year in life. She gave me the confidence and unwaivering support I needed at a time when I needed it the most. I will always be grateful for the care she provided me and my family.

Having a postpartum Doula was the best decision I ever made! As a second time mom I knew I would need help with having a 3 year old and twins on the way. I knew that the Doula was going to help me out with my twins but I just didn't realize how much they would help. My Doula came to my house and allowed me to sleep, take a shower, made me breakfast and lunch, bath the babies and helped me with tandem nursing. She was there for me anytime I needed her by phone even at 5 AM 4 days postpartum when I had a minor freak out! She was there to help calm me down and was a huge support system. I would recommend everyone to have a postpartum Doula, it is the best money you can spend on after care for yourself! Now my twins are two months old, they're healthy and we are breast-feeding with ease all thanks to Sheila!!
